Indian New Zealand Relations

India-New Zealand have traditionally enjoyed cordial and friendly relations based on common linkages of Commonwealth, parliamentary democracy, English language and sports.

Political relations and institutional framework:

Visits from India: Smt. Indira Gandhi and Shri Rajiv Gandhi visited New Zealand in 1968 and 1986 respectively. Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Shri Vayalar Ravi visited New Zealand in
October 2006. Shri P. Chidambaram, Minister of Finance, made an official visit to New Zealand
from 19-23 November 2006. The Chief Minister of Uttaranchal, Shri Narayan Datt Tiwari, visited
New Zealand from 17-21 December 2006. Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyar, Minister of Panchayati Raj,
Sports and Youth Affairs visited New Zealand in March 2007. Mr. Shyam Saran, Special Envoy of
PM, visited New Zealand in April 2007. Shri Shankarsinh Vaghela, Minister of Textiles visited
New Zealand from 5-8 July 2007. Minister of Youth, Sports and Local Government Shri Mani
Shankar Aiyar, visited New Zealand in April, 2008 to attend the Leaders in Sports conference.
Minister of Commerce, Shri Kamal Nath visited New Zealand in May, 2008. Minister of State
(Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. M.S. Gill, visited New Zealand from 22-25
March, 2009. Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Parliament visited New Zealand from 13-19
February, 2010 as the inaugural Sir Edmund Hillary Fellow. Mr. M. K. Alagiri, Minister for
Chemical & Fertilizers paid a private visit to New Zealand from March 26-29, 2010, Mr. Kapil
Sibal, Minister for Human Resource Development, visited New Zealand from April 10-14, 2010,
Mr. Sushil Kumar Shinde, Minister for Power, paid a private visit to New Zealand from June 13-19,
2010, Mr. Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs visited New Zealand from June 18-21,
2010, Mr. Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, Governor of Orissa, visited New Zealand from
September 3-5, 2010. Finance Secretary, Shri Ashok Chawla, visited New Zealand from

September 14-18, 2010. The Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Nirmal Verma, visited New Zealand
from October 31 to November 5, 2010. Shri Namo Narian Meena, MOS (Finance), visited New
Zealand from 3-6 February, 2011. Mr. Anand Sharma, Minister of Commerce and Industry visited
New Zealand from May 8-10, 2011.

Visits from New Zealand: Mr. Phil Goff, Minister of Defence, Disarmament and Trade visited
India in April 2007. Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Michael Cullen visited India in
September/October 2007. Agriculture and Forestry Minister Hon. Jim Anderton visited India in
March 2008. Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand, the Governor General accompanied by his wife
Susan Satyanand paid a State Visit to India from September 8-14, 2008. Mr. Tim Groser, Minister
of Trade & Conservation and Associate Minister for Climate Change Issues & Foreign Affairs
visited India from February 17-22, 2009. Mr. Groser also visited India from 1-7 September, 2009
to attend the informal WTO Ministerial meeting held in New Delhi on 3-4 September, 2009. Dr.
Richard Worth, former Minister for Internal Affairs visited India from February 24-28, 2009 leading
a delegation of India Trade Group. The Governor General, accompanied by Lady Susan
Satyanand, visited New Delhi on October 2-9, 2010 to represent the New Zealand Government at
the XIX Commonwealth Games. The Governor General also visited New Delhi from 5-10 January,
2011, as the Chief Guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Mr. Jonathan Coleman, Minister of
Immigration visited India on March 16-18, 2011 to inaugurate the New Zealand Consulate
General in Mumbai. Mr. Wayne Mapp, Minister for Defence, Science and Innovation and
Associate Minister for Economic Development and Tertiary Education visited India on April 27-28,
2011. Prime Minister Rt. Hon. John Key accompanied by his wife Mrs. Bronagh Key paid a state
visit to India from June 26-30, 2011. The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Trade Minister,
Mr. Tim Groser and Member of Parliament, Mr. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi.

Joint Commission : Ministry of Commerce and Industry is the nodal Ministry. Joint Business
Council meeting was held in New Zealand in May, 2011.

Foreign Office Consultations : India New Zealand Foreign Office Consultations were held in
New Delhi on 29th April, 2010.

Indian New zealand Bilateral Trade : The bilateral trade has been growing steadily reaching nearly $1.268 billion last year. items of export to India are Coking Coal, Wool, Logs, Sheep skin leather, raw hides and skins and major items of import from India are Diamond, Jewellery articles, Bed linen, table linen,
garments and footwear. Mahindra-Satyam, HCL Technologies, WIPRO, Infosys and Tech
Mahindra, New India Assurance Co. Ltd., and Bank of Baroda have presence in New Zealand.
Free Trade Agreement: New Zealand and India agreed to undertake a joint study into the
implications of a free trade agreement (FTA) in 2007. That study was completed in February 2009
and has since been accepted and approved by the New Zealand and Indian governments. The
study found that considerable potential exists to substantially develop the bilateral trade and
economic relationship. Necessary approvals have been accorded by both the Governments for

Free Trade Agreement negotiations. The first round of negotiations was held in Wellington on
April 7-8, 2010, the second round was held in New Delhi on August 10-13, 2010, the third round
was held in Wellington on October 26-28, 2010, the fourth round was held in New Delhi on March
7-11, 2011 and the fifth round was held in New Delhi on May 30- June 2, 2011.

Indian Community : There are about 110,000 people of Indian origin. They mainly hail from
Gujarat (over 80%) and Punjab and are concentrated in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and
Christchurch. Most of them are engaged in grocery business and dairy farming. There are also
several professionals including doctors, professors, engineers, chartered accountants and
computer experts. Most people of Indian origin have acquired New Zealand citizenship. There are
Indian Associations in major towns, which help the community, nurture its cultural heritage.
